MLB: Fantasy Baseball Injury Report 9/2/21

Good Morning! Here is my daily fantasy baseball injury report. Throughout the season I will post daily content (and if not, I will give you a few days heads up that I’ll be absent). These injury reports are of those that were either scratched, removed, or placed on IL the previous day. If a player is reported as injured after 8am, their name appears on the NEXT days injury report. Yes, that does mean that the later games may have players who are put on an injury report a day late. I try to speculate on who will take the players place in the lineup/order/rotation based on depth charts and stats. This is just speculation; I am no god. Think of it as brainstorming with you, the fantasy owner, as a way to mitigate your loss. I do not update players health status. Once they are placed on here, they are out of sight and out of mind until they drop the designation and are playing in a game. Even then, if they are not fully in the game I will not comment. Thank you for giving my reports an opportunity and a look. I hope you found them helpful.

I have began posting fantasy football injury reports and content on my SubStack at: https://dailyfantasysporttakes.substack.com/p/coming-soon?r=pbjbn&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&utm_source=copy .

Hitters

Chicago Cubs: Matt Duffy (3B) – The utility man was a late scratch on Wednesday with a stiff neck. He is currently the backup to Patrick Wisdom, and is a depth option across the infield. Between Andrew Romine and Sergio Alcantara, there really isn’t a correct pick. They are a combined .183 at the plate with 4 home runs.

Milwaukee Brewers: Manny Pina (C) – The backup backstop was placed on the IL on Wednesday with an oblique injury. He hadn’t played in a few days, and has struggled this season at the plate. Omar Narvaez is the starter, and Luke Maile will be the backup. Maile has a <.200 career average at the MLB level and will not win you a matchup.

New York Yankees: Gio Urshela (3B) – Whilst playing defense on Tuesday, Urshela injured his hand and was held out of the game on Wednesday as a result. He had played through it the game prior, going 1 for 4 and has struggled since returning from the IL (2/21). Tyler Wade is outpacing Rougned Odor at the plate (.284 vs .211) with 13 stolen bases. Odor does have an advantage over Wade though in that he has power whereas Wade doesn’t with 15 home runs.

Pitchers

Chicago White Sox: Craig Kimbrel (RP) – The closer was unavailable on Wednesday due to an unspecified physical injury. Although it wasn’t pointed out to what exactly is bothering him, COVID related issues are ruled out. If he misses additional time, the trickledown effect should boost Ryan Burr and give him some high leverage opportunities.

Colorado Rockies: Kyle Freeland (SP) – The hurler only got through a single inning during his start on Wednesday before leaving with a hip injury. He had given up a run and two walks in that inning, and this follows a three start stretch of quality outings. Antonio Santos was just recalled and he is one of their depth starting options. He’ll likely have to fill in if Freeland cannot go the next time around the rotation.

Kansas City Royals: Jakob Junis (RP) – In his return from the minors, Junis only got through 4.2 innings before being pulled with a shoulder issue. He had given up three runs by that point. It’s unclear if this is the same injury that landed him on the IL in AAA but it has landed him on it here. The team is currently running a six-man rotation and I doubt they will need a fill in for Junis.

Milwaukee Brewers: Brett Anderson (SP) – Snake bitten is an understatement when it comes to describing Anderson’s season. This has to be the third or fourth time he’s appeared on this list this season. On Wednesday he was hit by a line drive in the shoulder and left the game after 2 scoreless innings. This should free up Aaron Ashby to stay in the rotation.

Oakland Athletics: Lou Trivino (RP) – It was revealed that Trivino hasn’t pitched in a week due to back spasms. Trivino had given up 6 runs across his last three outings, a total of 3.1 innings pitched in that span. Deolis Guerra is tearing it up at the moment for the club in low leverage situations and deserves to be given a look in high leverage.

San Francisco Giants: Johnny Cueto (SP) – This is a classic case of a botched injury situation by management. Cueto was put out there for his turn in the rotation this week and it resulted in 10 hits allowed in under four innings. Management acknowledges he has been dealing with an elbow issue for a week, and he had only just returned from the IL to begin with. He shouldn’t have been put out there. Jose Quintana cleaned up that outing by Cueto and should fill in for him as well going forward.

St. Louis Cardinals: Junior Fernandez (RP) – Following only 14 pitches, Fernandez left the game against the Reds with a lat injury. He had given up two runs by that point. TJ McFarland and Luis Garcia are two relievers that may see a slight uptick in opportunities with Fernandez out. Both have great rates.
